Around Town
ILLINOIS RAILWAY MUSEUM
the Illinois Railway Museum includes a number of steam locomotives (external combustion!) in addition to diesel and electric; some of them are operational, and may be available for rides. In addition, the transportation collection includes artifacts, equipment, and signals.
This museum is the result of decades of work by a dedicated group of volunteers committed to exhibiting, preserving, and maintaining this country’s and this region’s ground transportation history, and is a popular destination for those in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

VOLO AUTO MUSEUM

The world famous Volo Museum started as just a farm house in the 1800’s. It was then a second-hand store, that added a small collection of fix-and-flip Model T’s. The number of rare and special cars grew as quickly the Grams brothers’ reputation and people from all over the area started visiting just to see the collection.
Over 60 years, and 4 generations of Grams later, millions of people have visited from all over the world to see one of the country’s largest collection of rotating modern and classic collector cars, an antique mall with 300 vendors, and over 60 acres of the largest collections of the rarest, most fascinating and bizarre mechanical marvels, from boats, planes, and trains, to a military museum, Disney Galleries and a 15,000 square foot animatronic dinosaur park.
HISTORIC MEADOWDALE
RACEWAY

The Meadowdale Raceway was in existence from 1958-1970. The 3.25 mile long track had Monza banked curves at each end of the 4000 foot straight. The raceway was nicknamed “The Track of Death” because a driver got killed on its opening day. It is located by the Sunoco silo straight down Route 31 from the convention headquarters. The banks are gone now but the track is still visible and has been a protected forest preserve area for quite some time now.
THREE OAKS RECREATION AREA
The City of Crystal Lake reclaimed the long-abandoned Vulcan Lakes quarry and turned it into an amazing recreation experience. Enjoy pristine waters, natural habitat, and incredible fishing. Rent rowboats, canoes, kayaks, sailboats, and paddle boats. Plan a picnic, and overlook breathtaking views of the water and lake islands.
